Self Care – Keeping Yourself Entertained

Entertainment

Keeping yourself entertained while you’re at home is a challenge that not everyone is used to. But with all this free time, it’s a great opportunity to pick up a new hobby, learn a new skill, or catch up on some projects you’ve been putting off.

Hobbies:

Not everyone will enjoy the same things when it comes to hobbies. But there are no wrong answers! Grab a paintbrush, some clay, or a hammer and some nails and find a hobby you didn’t know you loved.

  • Painting
    • Grab the paint your have laying around in your spare room
    • Find a canvas (even if you have no proper canvases, you can use paper, a mug, a book, anything!)
    • Let your creativity run wild!
    • Remember, there are no mistakes, just happy accidents
  • Sculpting
    • You can use clay, playdoh, even the wax from cheese snacks!
    • Start small, make something from reference
    • Sculpt a mug, a fork, even a worm
    • Go from there!
  • DIY
    • Make something from the junk you have laying around the house
    • If you have access to tools you could make a birdhouse, a chair, or even just a shelf
  • There are hundreds of things you can learn to do!

Screen Time:

While sitting inside and binge-watching Netflix shows about tigers aren’t exactly the best for you, it passes the time, and shows and movies were made to be watched. Just make sure every once in a while you get off the couch, and not just for more snacks.

  • Tv Shows/Movies
    • Streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, HBO Now, Disney+, and others are king during the lockdown
    • You can find a lot of free streaming services while your stuck inside, so you don’t have to break the bank
  • Video Games
    • There are plenty of free games on consoles and PC to get into while in lockdown
    • Want to play old MS-DOS games for free? These games should be playable on most computers, and some still hold up to this day.
  • Music/Audiobooks/Podcasts
    • Audible has made a bunch of their originals free to listen to.
    • Spotify, Amazon Music, Pandora and more offer free music listening
    • Google Podcasts and Apple Podcast have hundreds of hours of entertainment for free

Learning a New Skill:

Why not take advantage of all this free time to learn a new skill. You could learn anything from how to code, to how to speak Swahili. The world is your oyster, and the resources are out there, so make use of them!

  • Learning skills Online
    • Khan Academy is for students learning math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more.
    • Learn a new creative skill with Skillshare. For painting, photography, illustration and so much more.
    • If it’s a digital skill you are looking to learn, check out Lynda.com They have tutorials and video classes for basically any online tool.
    • Udemy is an online school that teaches everything from business to makeup.

Caring for yourself is the most impactful way to fight this virus. Even if we cant go outside, let’s show the world how we can survive and thrive in any situation. We are all in this together and hopefully you can keep your focus on your health and well being long after the crisis has passed.
